Farming Practices
Rocky Mountain Peach company tries to stay on the forefront of farming technological advances,
particularly in increasing efficiency and ecological balance. Many of the technological advances
we incorporate reduce work and are environmentally friendly at the same time.
Most of our hand work is done by hard working Mexican seasonal laborers. They are responsible for the pruning, thinning, and the highly intensive picking and packing. Mexican labor is very important for the viabilty of peach farming in Palisade and we try to maintain mutually beneficial relationships with our friends from south of the border. They are attracted by comparatively high paying jobs that give them the opportunity to care for and improve the lives of their families in Mexico while accomplishing a difficult work that most citizens of the US are unwilling to do.
Thanks to grants from the National Resource Conservation Service we have installed sprinklers on most of our property. Our sprinkler systems reduce work and solve water problems at the same time. The system lowers farm water consumption and saline levels in the Colorado river while at the same time eliminating tedious furrow irrigation and some tractor work. Sprinkler systems revolutionize overall farm efficiency.
The soils our fruit is grown in are predominantly treated with natural acidic composts that are pH balanced to improve tree health in our alkaline soils.
Rocky Mountain Peach Company strives to incorporate as many natural methods as possible in the struggle againsts peach tree pests and the elements. Whenever possible we avoid the use of chemically engineered synthetic sprays in favor of natural solutions. Still, we have to use synthetic sprays to stop a problem that isn't currently addressed with natural methods or to quell an unusually bad infestation. By pursuing feasible natural methods, we attempt to create a naturally balanced orchards that promote health through reducing or eliminating synthetic chemicals.
We also try to recycle as much of our waste as possible and are considering solutions for our other sources of waste not currently being reused. We encourage all our customers to recycle the cardboard that contains their peaches.
We are a conventional grower that understands the advantages of organic solutions.
